Pastor’s Panel Discussion for May 2013

pastorspanel

To hear the panel discussion, click here.

This month the pastors of the ESPN (English Speaking Pastors Network) are talking the topic of prayer, just in time for the National Day of Prayer.  They ask and answer questions including the following:

  • Does God actually hear our prayers?
  • How do we know if a delay is a “no” or a “wait?”
  • Is there a proper/correct way to pray?
  • Is prayer just a waste of time and effort?
  • Many, many more

The pastors are transparent and fun, answering questions and asking hard ones to each other.  These discussions are always fun and unscripted.

The pastors in this edition include Cory Casterton of Abundant Life in Carolina, Bob Zoba of Second Union Church in Guaynabo, Carmen Gutierrez of Metro Vineyard in Santurce, Mariel López of Calvary Church of the Nazarene in San Juan, Joe Ramos of Palmas Community Church in Palmas del Mar, and Zion Green of World Global Ministries in Santurce.

Welcome to Lamplighter Theatre Radio Drama

lamplighterbutton

This week The Rock Radio Network says a sad good-bye to The Pond and welcomes Lamplighter Theatre to Kid’s Time!  The Pond ceased production in 2010, and though we were happy to air repeats for a while, many of you were beginning to comment on the fact that you were hearing the same broadcasts over and over.  So after much searching, we selected Lamplighter Theatre to replace it.

Lamplighter Theatre is an exceptionally well-produced Christian radio drama that aims to bring old classics to light.  Created by some of the same minds that bring you “Adventures in Odyssey,” it features the vocal talent of some of Britain’s finest actors, including John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the Rings trilogy).  Lamplighter Theatre dramatizes Bible stories, old classic books, and many other stories in a family-friendly, Christ-honoring way.  The production values are spectacular, so prepare to be hooked from the first episode!

Here’s a taste from one episode:

As of this week, there are a few new programming changes on The Rock Radio Network

  • Sports Spectrum is going from a 55 minute to a 25 minute format.  The ministry of RBC (producers of the program) recently announced this change because it allows more stations to fit the program in with their format.  The program will still air at 3 p.m. Saturdays during this part of the year.
  • The Rock is happy to be adding the “Sports Spectrum Daily Update!”  It’s a new little 2-minute daily feature which will bring you up to date on all the day’s big sports news from a Christian perspective.  It will air just after 5 p.m., right before “New Horizons” with Pastor Cory Casterton.
  • The Rock is welcoming MoneyWise with Howard Dayton and Steve Moore to Saturday afternoons at 3:25 p.m. or so.  It’s a program dedicated to helping you manage your finances using Biblical principles.

Every church can do world missions

Melody Garófalo in our San Juan studios

San Juan, PR (RR)  ”The local church is God’s prime mover for the Great Commission – not big missionary agencies,” says Melody Garófalo, International Internship Director for Go to the Nations and the Coordinator of SENDAS Global Puerto Rico, a new event aimed at fostering churches that send missionaries into the world.  ”This means every church. Big churches and little churches.  Every church has a role to play.”  To hear the full interview, click here.

“Senda Global” will be held April 11-13 at Iglesia Discípulos de Cristo in Barrio Amelia, Guaynabo.  For more information or to attend Senda Global Puerto Rico, call (787) 790-0091.  The event is being sponsored by AMIES-WEC International, a local missions group.

Garófalo believes that churches in Puerto Rico need to become missionary senders, not just missionary receivers.  ”It is a wonderful thing that many local churches are reaching into their communities and touching local families. That is a valid call.  But the truth is, that is not enough.  Every church needs to be busy with the Great Commission.  And if you notice, ‘go into all the world’ is not limited to one city, or one island, or even one nation.”

Garófalo remembers how when she first felt the call to world missions, her church did not have the tools to help her.  ”I attended that church for seventeen years, and during that time I began to sense that God had a world missions calling on my life.  When I spoke to the pastor about it, he gathered the church to pray over me and that was the extent of it.  That was all they could honestly do.  I noticed the same thing at college and then later at Bible college.  There were groups of us who were wanting to go into world missions – eager to change the world!  But it seemed as though the local church – which is the specific tool that God uses for world missions – just was not equipped to send out missionaries to the world.”

Melody acknowledges that churches feel hesitant to send world missionaries for some very good reasons.  ”There is a risk there.  We’ve all heard those stories about how the pastor put their arm around a young man or woman and said, ‘The Lord is calling this person to go reach the nations.  Let’s help them get there.’  And then the person gets to that missions field without any experience, without really knowing what to expect.  And a year later, they give up and come back burned out, broke, maybe a little bit angry and disillusioned.  Then the pastor finds themselves between a rock and a hard place.  They don’t know what to do next.  How can they support someone without knowing what will happen?  This is why, understandably, many churches will say, ‘You know what?  Why don’t you go serve in our own community?  Why don’t you start a Bible school right here at home?’  And while there’s nothing wrong with doing home missions, people whom the Lord has called to world missions do not belong, ultimately, in home missions.  They can only work out their calling in going to the nations.”

Senda Global (Global Pathways) is a program designed to fill in the gap.  It helps churches to create a world missions strategy, as well as to train missionaries to rise from the congregation.  It gives pastors and church leaders concrete steps to follow to help them find, equip, test, and send forth missionaries.  Melody Garófalo is coordinating a “Senda Global” seminar aimed at church leaders that starts April 11, 12, and 13 at the Iglesia Discípulos de Cristo in Barrio Amelia, Guaynabo PR.  It gives three days of intense missions training for the church team.  Also offered is followup training, books, and materials.  The cost is $55 per attendee.  For more information, call (787) 790-0091.
