Hato Rey, PR - Today more than 1,000 concerned parents, teachers, community leaders, pastors, and voters gathered in front of the Departamento de Educación to protest the new “Perspectiva de Género” program.  “Perspectiva de Género” will mandate a new curriculum in all the schools of Puerto Rico, incorporating a very unbiblical, anti-family worldview into the books and classes of children from kindergarten through 12th grade.

In May 2008, Rafael Aragunde, Director of the Departamento de Educación, issued his now-infamous Carta Circular #3 2008-2009, in which he stated that “sex” and “gender” are two different concepts.  He said gender is a “social construct.”  He instructed all schools to implement a “third-gender perspective” in their curriculums.  No school would be exempt, not even religious or homeschools.  This directive sparked a firestorm of protest as it became apparent that Sr. Aragunde was determined to foist an anti-family agenda upon Puerto Rico.  (To see the Carta Circular, click here)

Monday October 27, parents, concerned teachers, and leaders from across the community gathered in Hato Rey.  They came together to protest this dangerous agenda.  Over 1,000 protestors braved the searing heat to show their disapproval.  Chanting slogans, singing, and raising signs, they demanded a retraction of Carta Circular #3 and an end to the “Perspectiva de Género.”

Rigoberto Diguero shares his vision for Latin American missions in Prod Studio A at The Rock's facilities in San Juan

Rigoberto Diguero in Prod Studio A at The Rock's facilities in San Juan

“A church that doesn’t do missions is like a hospital that is not helping sick people,” he says.  You see the passion in his eyes.  You hear it in his voice, a firm timbre that belies his gentle exterior.  Rigoberto Diguero is Director of El Centro Latinoamericano para la Misión Mundial.  He sat down with Rock Radio Network host Dalan Decker to share his vision for Puerto Rico and all of Latin America.  “This is a blessed place,” he says.  “The Lord has blessed Puerto Rico in a great, great way - and with a great responsibility to send out missionaries, to do missions.”

Originally from Guatemala, Sr. Diguero is excited about the role that God has for Latin America in His world plan.  “I normally thought that to be a missionary you had to be white, blonde, and tall,” he says.  “I remember when we used to joke, ‘Padre Santo que estás en el Norte.’  But Latin America?  Yes.  We can do it, we have to do it, we must do it.” He says that over 9,000 missionaries from all over Latin America, including Puerto Rico, are serving in some of the toughest missions fields today.  From the 10/40 window of Islamic and Hindu countries, to Eastern Europe, Spain, and even the United States.

Today, Sr. Diguero works with the Perspectivas courses.  These are a series of lessons designed to teach Spanish speakers about the opportunity and need for missionaries in our time.  Students get a rounded view of the hows, wheres, and whys.  His ministry has the material in English and Spanish; also, they produce DVDs and other resources that Christians can use to equip.  Diguero has visited every single Latin American country, bringing hope and challenge.  He travels extensively in Europe as well.

This Tuesday, we will be sharing his special interview.  For now, check out some sound bites: Promo 1; Promo 2.  The program will air Tuesday the 22nd at 5:15 p.m.  Or grab it here as soon as it’s available.  You have full permission to distribute as you wish.

Visit El Centro Latinoamericano para la Misión Mundial  Or call (626) 398-2215.  Reach him by e-mail at latindiv@aol.com

Hurricane Ike over Cuba

Hurricane Ike over Cuba

Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike.  With the flurry of hurricanes around us in the Caribbean, we have been incredibly blessed this year.  So far in 2008, God has spared the island of Puerto Rico.  But our neighbors in Haiti have been slammed by them all!  When the headlines move on, it can be easy to forget that over 500 people in Haiti are confirmed dead and tens of thousands are left without a place to sleep, clean water, food, and other basic needs.  Diarrhea and other diseases are wreaking havock because the people are drinking filthy water.  These are our neighbors!  Visit Samaritan’s Purse here for more information on the current crisis in Haiti.  Pray, give, and get involved.  Is God calling you to serve in Haiti?  There are lots of good Christian organizations serving there - like OMS International.  OMS runs a radio station, a school, a hospital, and a seminary.  To help them rebuild, earmark your check for the Haiti Disaster Relief Fund #405120.  Get involved today!  Remember what Jesus said, “To the extent that you have done this for the least of these my brethren, you have done it to me.”
